In 1955, Nanyang University, the first Chinese university in Southeast Asia, was founded by a private fundraising campaign. The site of Yunnan Garden was generously donated by the Hokkien Huay Kuan in Singapore. In 1980, Nanyang University and the University of Singapore merged to form the National University of Singapore.

In 1981, the Singapore government established Nanyang Polytechnic on the site of Nanyang University to nurture engineering professionals for Singapore’s rapidly growing economy. In 1985, Nanyang Polytechnic was named one of the most outstanding engineering schools in the world by the Commonwealth Council of Works.

In 1987, the School of Accounting and Business was established, which has now developed into the internationally renowned Nanyang Business School. In 1988, the School of Applied Science was established.

In 1991, Nanyang Polytechnic was restructured with the National Institute of Education under its umbrella and renamed Nanyang Technological University as its own college. In 1992, the School of Communication was established. In 1995, the School of Accounting and Business was renamed Nanyang Business School.

In 1996, the alumni Register of Nanyang University was transferred to Nanyang Technological University for preservation. In 2000, the School of Applied Science was restructured to form the School of Computer Engineering and the School of Materials Engineering. In 2001, the School of Biological Sciences was established, and in the same year, the School of Civil and Structural Engineering was renamed the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering.

In 2003, the nine-story Science and Technology Building was completed.
